The average solopreneur has been pitched 40 AI tools in the last 18 months. Most of them overlap. Few of them are worth paying for. The best AI stack is small, intentional, and earns its subscription cost every month.
Here’s the stack that runs a real solo business — built around the principle of one tool per job, no duplication.
The Stack, by Category
Writing and Thinking: Claude
Every writing task, every thinking task, every complex instruction — this is Claude’s territory.
Use it for: client proposals, deliverables, emails, research synthesis, brainstorming, content drafts, editing, meeting summaries, strategy documents, pricing frameworks.
It replaces: most of what you might reach for in Jasper, Copy.ai, or any other AI writing tool for quality work.
Price: Free tier available. Claude Pro $20/month — worth it once you’re using it daily for client work.
SEO Content: Koala Writer
If you’re building a content site or blog, you need SEO-optimized drafts faster than Claude’s general-purpose interface produces them. Koala pulls real-time SERP data and structures articles around what’s actually ranking.
Use it for: blog post first drafts targeting specific keywords.
It doesn’t replace Claude: for voice, quality, and anything other than SEO blog content, use Claude.
Price: From $9/month. Only subscribe if you’re publishing 4+ SEO posts per month.
Design: Canva AI
Professional visual content without a designer. Templates, AI generation, background removal, and brand kit — everything you need for client materials, social graphics, and marketing assets.
Use it for: presentations, social graphics, flyers, email headers, proposal cover pages, product covers.
It doesn’t replace: professional design software for complex original work. For everything else, it’s sufficient.
Price: Free plan (limited AI). Canva Pro $15/month — worth it if you produce visual content 3+ times per week.
Research: Perplexity
Real-time, cited web research. Faster than manual search for market data, competitor analysis, and current information.
Use it for: pricing research, competitor context before proposals, industry background for client work, quick fact-checking.
It doesn’t replace Claude: Perplexity finds information; Claude does something with it.
Price: Free tier covers most research needs. $20/month Pro for heavy daily research.
Newsletter and Audience: Beehiiv
The email list is the most valuable long-term asset in a solo business. Beehiiv’s free plan is genuinely excellent — up to 2,500 subscribers, unlimited sends, Boosts monetization from day one.
Use it for: weekly newsletter, audience building, affiliate promotion, eventually paid subscriptions and sponsorships.
Start this now regardless of whether you have an audience yet. The list grows. Starting it later doesn’t accelerate that growth.
Price: Free up to 2,500 subscribers. Scale plan $39/month when you’re ready for paid subscriptions and ad network access.

Project and Knowledge Management: Notion
One workspace for your entire operation: project tracking, SOPs, client documentation, content calendar, meeting notes, reference material.
Use it for: everything you need to remember, track, or reference about your business.
Price: Free plan is sufficient for solo use. $10/month Plus for more file storage and history. Notion AI add-on $10/month if you’re in Notion daily.
Marketing Copy (Supplemental): Copy.ai
Optional. The free plan includes enough monthly words for supplemental marketing copy work — Facebook ads, Google ads, product descriptions — without paying.
Use it for: short-form marketing copy formats that aren’t Claude’s focus.
Price: Free tier is sufficient for supplemental use.

Core: $35/Month
| Tool | Cost |
|---|---|
| Claude Pro | $20/month |

This covers the two upgrades with the clearest ROI. Claude Pro removes usage constraints for daily client work. Canva Pro unlocks the full AI feature set and brand kit for professional visual output.
Full Stack: $75–$100/Month

Add Koala when you’re publishing 4+ SEO posts per month. Add Beehiiv Scale when you’re ready to monetize through paid subscriptions or the ad network.
What to Add in Order
If you’re building this stack from zero:
- Start with Claude free and Beehiiv free. Use Claude for client work. Start your newsletter.
- Add Claude Pro when free tier usage limits become a daily friction point.
- Add Canva Pro when you’re producing visual content regularly.
- Add Koala when you’re publishing consistently and want faster SEO drafts.
- Upgrade Beehiiv when you’re ready to monetize through paid subscriptions or ad network.
Each addition should be triggered by a real bottleneck, not a feature you might use someday.
What to Skip
Jasper: Good product, team pricing. At $49/month for one user, it doesn’t earn its cost versus Claude at $20/month for solo operators.
Grammarly Premium: The free tier covers grammar correction. Claude covers everything else. Grammarly Premium at $12/month is redundant if you’re already using Claude Pro.
Multiple AI writing tools: Claude, Copy.ai, Jasper, and ChatGPT all overlap significantly. Pick one as primary, keep one supplemental free plan. Don’t pay for duplicates.
Bottom Line
The best AI stack is the one with the fewest tools that fully covers your needs. Start with Claude and Beehiiv. Add tools when you hit specific, real limitations. Never pay for tool overlap.
Two tools, used consistently, beat ten tools used halfheartedly.
